Origin: Ascona, Locarno, Canton Ticino – Terreni alla Maggia.
Raw materials: Pure locally grown malted barley, pure mountain water.
Color: Amber/bronze, clear.
Nose: Typical and deep: vanilla, fruity notes of dates and dried figs, with hints of cherry.
Palate: Round and enveloping, smooth, with good persistence; full-bodied but balanced, not aggressive.
Alcohol content: 43% vol.
Serving temperature: 16–20 °C (serve neat in a tulip/Glencairn glass; a drop of water can be added to open up the aromas).
Pairings: Excellent with dark chocolate and dried fruits (walnuts, hazelnuts), caramel or cocoa-based desserts, blue and aged cheeses; also pleasant as a meditation drink after a meal.
Terroir: The barley comes from the Maggia Delta: sandy-silty alluvial soils, mild Insubric climate with significant temperature variations between day and night. Terreni alla Maggia is a historic agricultural estate in the Locarno area and a pioneer in Ticino for rice and cereals as well.
Production and Distillation: Fermentation and distillation of the malt are entrusted to the Locher Brewery (Appenzell, CH); aged for at least 12 years in 500L ex-Sherry and ex-Port casks in the cellars of Cantina alla Maggia. In 2008, it was the first single malt produced in Ticino.
Description: The Ascona Whisky is a distinctive Swiss single malt: from "zero-km" raw materials grown in Ascona comes a rich and gentle distillate, where long aging in ex-Sherry and ex-Port wood sculpts scents of vanilla and dried fruit and a warm, smooth, and persistent sip. It is an elegant interpretation of a single malt, designed for those seeking controlled sweetness, balance, and a territorial character that is rare in the Swiss landscape.
