Origin: Dufftown, Speyside, Scotland β The Balvenie Distillery, part of William Grant & Sons
Raw materials: Malted barley (single malt)
Color: Bright golden amber
Nose: Complex and enveloping, with sweet notes of honey and vanilla, ripe red fruit, plum, cherry, dark chocolate, and slight hints of nuts and freshly baked croissant.
Palate: Smooth, round, and balanced. Creamy vanilla, cherry, and raspberry emerge on the palate, accompanied by cinnamon and a peppery touch. Time spent in sherry casks imparts sweetness, dried fruit, and light spices, which blend harmoniously with the smoother bourbon base.
Alcohol content: 40%
Serving temperature: 16/18 Β°C β ideal neat, with a drop of water, or with ice if preferred
Pairings: Pairs well with dark chocolate desserts and dried fruit, aged cheeses like Pecorino or Parmesan, smoked meats, and light roasts. Also excellent as an after-dinner contemplative whisky.
Terroir: The Balvenie distillery represents a rare example of complete artisanal production: locally grown barley, traditional floor malting, an in-house coppersmith, and a cooperage for cask maintenance. The Speyside terroir lends elegance and softness, with a fruity and floral character typical of the region.
Production: This whisky undergoes a double maturation ("DoubleWood"): 12 years in ex-bourbon American oak casks, followed by approximately 9 months in European oak ex-Oloroso sherry casks. This method, devised by Malt Master David Stewart MBE, enriches the spirit with greater complexity, sweetness, and structure.
Description: The Balvenie 12 Year Old DoubleWood is one of the distillery's most iconic expressions. Thanks to the double maturation technique, it harmoniously combines softness and complexity: on one hand, the sweet and creamy notes of bourbon, and on the other, the spicy and fruity richness of sherry. It is an accessible yet refined whisky, perfect for both those new to single malts and experienced enthusiasts looking for balance and depth.
Classification: Single Malt Scotch Whisky
Type: Whisky β not sparkling, no dosage applicable
Allergens: Contains sulfites (always check the label)
Awards and ratings: Recognized by international critics with average scores between 86 and 90 points (Whisky Advocate, Whisky Base). It is considered a benchmark in the Speyside single malt scene.
Philosophy: Integrated artisanal production β the distillery follows every step, from barley to bottle, maintaining a traditional and authentic style.
